The Scottish Open is set to kick off tomorrow, and will conclude on Sunday. With that in mind, golfing fans from all around the world are now turning their attention to Scotland to see just how the Open will go – and with things due to kick off soon, the bookies don’t seem to be hugely confident in any one particular golfer to bring home the cup.
With that being said, though, of the countless different players, there’s one that currently stands out in the odds as the favourite to win the Scottish Open: Scottie Scheffler. But how are Scheffler’s odds looking, and can he really be successful in this major event? Well, let’s take a look!
Scottie Scheffler Currently Stands as the Bookies’ Favourites
Scottie Scheffler currently leads the way in terms of bookies’ odds for the Scottish Open. Indeed, Bet365 and William Hill are both offering odds of 9/2 (5.5) on Scheffler to win the Open, and BetVictor are marginally more confident still at odds of 4/1 (5.0). Given this, we can say for certain that Scheffler’s the clear favourite – but not so much that the bookies consider him an almost guaranteed winner.
Perhaps part of this ties in with Scheffler’s recent form, where he’s been up there among the top for almost every event – but hasn’t been quite so lucky in terms of wins. Indeed, in the current PGA Tour season, he has secured top-10 finishes in 11 of his last 14 events – not a bad result at all. However, of those, he only pulled off three wins.
Given he’s currently the World Number One (and has been for over 100 weeks), he’s undoubtedly going to put up a good fight. But will the Scottish Open be another event where he only places, or will he actually win outright? That’s yet to be seen.
A Strong Field of Golfers to Contend With
Though Scheffler’s number one in the rankings so far, that’s not to say he’s the only strong contender in the runnings, and he’ll have plenty of big-name competition to go up against. Rory McIlroy, for example, is just behind in the rankings as World Number Two, and as a previous top player himself, and as one of the most acclaimed golfers of all time (especially given his recent return to form this year), he could put up a massive fight. He’s a way down still on the odds, though, with bookies offering odds of around 8/1 (9.0) for him to win.
Other notable names in the field include Tommy Fleetwood at 18/1 (19.0) and Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and Ludvig Åberg all sitting at 22/1 (23.0). These characters are all top-ten players on the Official World Golf Ranking, so it’s certainly possible they could put up a good fight.
Can Scheffler Bring Home the Win?
While Scheffler is undoubtedly the current favourite on the field to win the Scottish Open, he’s far from the only candidate – and with so many big names in the running, he’ll almost certainly still need to be playing at top form to secure a win. And, while Rory McIlroy is a long way off Scheffler in the rankings, he could still pose a significant challenge in particular.
In the end, all we can do is wait and see tomorrow how things look for the first round.
